On July 16, during a live broadcast, Chu addressed online speculation questioning his identity.
Firmly, he stated, “I may not have grown up in Mainland China, but I am Chinese,”.
Chu elaborated on his family roots, revealing that his grandparents hailed from Nanjing, while his maternal grandfather was from Kaifeng, Henan, and his grandmother from Hubei.
“Since childhood, both my parents taught me this belief, that I am Chinese,” he said.
The statement quickly stirred heated debate across social media.
In Taiwan, some netizens criticized him, commenting, “If you’re Chinese, just move to China and give up your Taiwanese citizenship,” and “Of course, it’s all about earning yuan, so you have to make statements like this,”.
Meanwhile, reactions on Chinese platforms were also mixed.
Some users wrote, “When he needs money, he’s Chinese. When he doesn’t, he’s Taiwanese,” while others added, “His attitude changed after marrying a mainland wife. It’s understandable for his career, but the motive is obvious,”.
