Chinese actor Mark Chao recently opened up about the current challenges facing China’s entertainment industry during an interview with Renwu.
He admitted that the market has slowed significantly compared to previous years.
Joking about the situation, Chao said the industry feels so “cold” that he “doesn’t even need to turn on the air conditioner during summer”.
He revealed that he received only around 10 film and television scripts during the first half of 2026, a sharp decline from the number of offers he used to receive at the peak of his career.
According to Chao, the slowdown has affected many actors across the industry.
Colleagues who were once too busy to meet can now easily find time because production opportunities have become much fewer.
The actor also expressed concern about the future of the film industry.
He believes audience preferences have changed dramatically, making movies increasingly difficult to produce and succeed.
Mark even remarked that “movies are almost gone,” describing cinema as an art form that could eventually become a niche luxury.
When asked whether he would encourage his daughter to enter the entertainment industry, Mark Chao gave an honest response.
