Japanese boy group ONE OR EIGHT has officially released its latest single, “YANKEE SQUAT” transforming one of Japan’s most recognizable youth culture symbols into a bold and energetic summer anthem.
The song combines Latin-inspired rhythms, hip-hop influences, and the group’s signature confident style.
It captures the carefree feeling of spending summer with friends, turning convenience stores, parking lots, and ordinary street corners into places filled with unforgettable memories.
The title comes from the famous “yankee squat”, a crouching pose long associated with Japan’s yankee youth culture.
Instead of avoiding the image, ONE OR EIGHT embraces it and redefines it as a symbol of individuality, hometown pride, and the freedom to express yourself wherever you are.
The accompanying music video expands on the concept through a humorous storyline.
It follows a fictional team of overseas researchers who treat the yankee squat as if it were an anthropological discovery.
Throughout the video, the members casually perform the pose in airports, shopping districts, and city streets, highlighting how naturally it fits into their everyday lives.
The video also references an interesting statistic, noting that only 13.5% of Americans are reportedly able to hold the squat position, with only 9% of those being Asian.
