Chinese comedy duo Shuang Gaotai has come under criticism after repeatedly using a pun based on actor Wei Daxun’s name during livestreams and live comedy performances.
The joke quickly became a topic of discussion across social media.
According to the duo, the wordplay originated from comedy sketches and variety shows they had previously watched.
They believed it was a widely recognized joke and did not intend to offend anyone.
However, many of Wei Daxun’s fans argued that using the actor’s name as part of a joke during commercial performances was inappropriate.
Some also pointed out that the duo continued using the pun even after receiving criticism, leading to accusations of disrespect.
Supporters of Shuang Gaotai defended them by saying that similar wordplay had circulated online for years and had been used by fans and content creators without malicious intent.
During a livestream on July 22, Shuang Gaotai publicly apologized for the controversy.
They admitted that making jokes with another person’s name was inappropriate and revealed that they had privately apologized to Wei earlier that day. (Overseasidol.com)
