Overseasidol.com — Chinese movie “Dongji Rescue” has generated a lot of buzz among audiences ahead of its August 8, 2025 release.

Directed by Guan Hu and Fei Zhenxiang, the film stars leading actors Zhu Yilong, Wu Lei, and Ni Ni.

Since its announcement, the project has been generating major buzz.

The story is based on real events during World War II. It tells the heroic tale of Chinese fishermen from Dongji Island who risked their lives to save British prisoners of war.

At the time, the Japanese cargo ship Lisbon Maru, carrying hundreds of British POWs, was sunk by U.S. forces.

The Japanese sealed the compartments, leaving the prisoners to die, but the local fishermen braved the danger to rescue them.

The film has already drawn huge attention. On multiple ticketing platforms, more than 800,000 viewers have marked it as “want to watch”.

Pre-sale box office figures have also reached nearly 16 million yuan.

Beyond the historical narrative, the movie boasts a powerhouse cast and production team.

Director Guan Hu previously helmed the 2020 war hit “The Eight Hundred”, which grossed over 3.1 billion yuan.

With acclaimed stars like Zhu Yilong, Wu Lei, and Ni Ni, expectations are set high.

To recreate the wartime scenes, the filmmakers used extensive underwater shoots and even built a full-scale 1:1 replica of the prisoner ship.

These efforts make ‘Dongjidao’ one of the most anticipated summer releases of 2025.
