Stephen Chow’s latest movie “Kung Fu Soccer” has achieved another major milestone at the Chinese box office.
As of July 17, the movie’s cumulative revenue, including advance ticket sales, has surpassed 1 billion yuan.
Released on July 11, the film earned approximately 260 million yuan on its opening day, setting the strongest opening record since this year’s Lunar New Year holiday season.
“Kung Fu Soccer” is Stephen Chow’s seventh independently directed feature film and is widely regarded as a spiritual successor to Shaolin Soccer, released 25 years ago.
The movie stars Zhang Xiaofei, Dilraba Dilmurat, and Lay Zhang, alongside former Chinese women’s national football players Zhao Lina and Li Jiayue.
The story follows the underdog Emei women’s football team as they overcome challenges and fight their way to the championship.
Staying true to Stephen Chow’s signature style, the film blends martial arts, football, and comedy into an inspiring sports adventure.
During the film’s promotional tour, Stephen Chow officially confirmed that “Kung Fu Soccer 2” has entered early development.
He revealed that the sequel will expand the story onto the international stage as the Emei team sets its sights on competing against the world’s strongest opponents.
